Birchbox Man - October 2012 Review - Monthly Men's Grooming and Lifestyle Subscription Boxes

This month's Birchbox Man was a little late - they had shipping issues. What I love about Birchbox is before I even noticed it was late, they emailed me, apologized and credited 100 points ($10) to my account! On top of the customer service going above and beyond - this box is great!

I love that Birchbox Man includes lifestyle items like these whiskey stones.  It keeps the boxes fun! (They are usually my boyfriend's favorite part of the box).


Verdict: We received over $30 worth of products in this box - a great value! Like I mentioned before, I had a $10 credit for this shipping late, and reviewed the items to earn another $6 so this box really only cost me $4 - amazing! 12 Society Box Four - October 2012 Review and Unboxing - Monthly Men's Subscription Boxes

I have some mixed thoughts / concerns about 12 Society's box and their subscription plan as a whole. I noticed they just made major changes to their website - the box used to promise a $125 value, and now they changed it to $85.  I would expect them to email their subscribers and inform them of this change, but instead I had to find out by checking out their site. Hopefully they will still email everyone before they charge for Box Five.

Also, they used to have 6 celebrities/athletes picking the items in the box, now they only mention:

"Get amazing products from Blake Griffin, Tim Lincecum, Nick Cannon, and many more"

Not sure what's going on - but I really hope they inform their subscribers soon.

The Box: 12 Society

The Cost: $39

The Products: $125 $85 worth of best-of products picked by celebrities/athletes.

This month's 12 Society box was all branded items made exclusively for 12 Society members.

Blake Griffin Canvas Print - 12 Society's MSRP $69.99

12 Society sweatshirt - MSRP $60

Not my style, but the material is high quality.

Mini Baseball Slugger - MSRP $25

Monogram iPhone 4 case - MSRP $49.99


Verdict: I'm using the MSRP 12 Society listed in the box for these items. Considering that you can't buy these items anywhere, and 12 Society could declare the MSRP to be anything they want, I think the value they are attributing to these products is a little high. The quality of these products is great, but they aren't for me. I'm also surprised they sent an iPhone 4 case to everyone - when so many people don't have iPhones, or are planning to upgrade to iPhone 5.

Last month, two out of the 5 items were branded (12 Society and Five Four Club) and it seems like they are moving to the trend of a completely branded box. If you are a Blake Griffin fan I think this is a great box to subscribe to, but I will likely cancel my subscription as it doesn't appeal to me, and I don't think a female version of 12 Society will be happening anytime soon.

Curator and Mule Review - Fall 2012 - Men's Accessory Subscription Boxes

This is my first Curator & Mule box. It's a quarterly Men's accessories subscription service. My boyfriend has gotten a little jealous of all the boxes I receive - so I'm glad to get a box for him!

Manhattan Portage DJ Messenger Bag - Value $49

I'm really impressed with the quality of this bag. It gets excellent reviews, is weather-repellent, and the perfect size for everyday items (iPad, lunch, etc.).

Wheelmen and Co The Thomas Belt - Value $29

I had never heard of this brand before - and I'm so glad we discovered it. This belt is made in the USA, and the rings are vintage Miltary D-rings from 1954 that have been resurfaced!

Sock it to Me Socks - Value $12

Field Notes 3 pack - Value $12.50


Verdict: I am seriously impressed with this box! I love the quality of the items and the value. The box is $60 a quarter, and we received over $100 worth of items. I think Curator and Mule would also make a great gift too because it's not size specific. If you're interested in the Fall box, it's still available here.

I'm really excited about Curator and Mule! It's a quarterly subscription for men and it's just accessories. This seems like a nice compliment to the Men's clothing subscription services, and it also is perfect for gift giving since you don't have to know the recipient's sizes.

12 Society Men's Lifestyle Subscription Box Review - September 2012 #BoxThree

My boyfriend and I both subscribe to 12 Society. His box arrived today, and mine still hasn't even shipped yet. I'm hoping that means that this month they will have boxes picked out specifically for their female subscribers, so I will continue to wait somewhat patiently for my box to arrive.

Native Union Pop Phone - Value $29

This is pretty cool. I've been wanting to pick up one of these handsets for my iPhone. They are supposed to help with call clarity.

Happy Socks Pair of Socks - Value $12

OK, first two items and the value is already more than what we paid ($39) - not bad.

Malin + Goetz Rum Bar Soap - 2 oz Value $6

I love this brand so I will be very happy if it's included in the women's 12 Society box.

12 Society Shirt - Value $20?

Five Four Club Shirt - Value $20?

Five Four Club is a Men's clothing monthly subscription service that sends you about $100 worth of items each month for $60. Included with this shirt was a coupon code for 25% off your first box. (Use coupon code 12SOCIETY). I love any excuse to try another subscription box service, we might sign up!


Verdict: I really like the quality of the items in this box. I don't know what the actual value of these shirts should be, but they would have to be over $35 each to hit the minimum $125 value they guarantee in this box. That being said, I think this is a good box, and I'm excited to see what's in the female 12 Society box this month. Hopefully it ships soon!

12 Society #boxtwo Review - August 2012 - Monthly Subscription Box

12 Society is a Men's Lifestyle subscription box. I signed up because they offer boxes for female customers as well. So far there really haven't been items selected specifically for their women customers besides a JewelMint $20 discount card that came in box one.

The box: 12 Society

The price: $39 plus free shipping

The products: 4 to 6 hand-picked "best of" products $125 min. value in every box picked by athletes and celebrities.

Tempo Batteryless Acoustic Amplifier for the iPhone - Value $24.99

I actually already have this product. It's works really well too so I recommend it. $24.99 was the list price I could find on Amazon, but when I bought it I got it on sale for $3.

Call of Duty Billets - Value $26

The packaging of these headphones was pretty cool. I'm not much of a video game player though, so these go to the BF.

EA Games: Scrabble for iPhone and FIFA 12 for iPad - $1.99 and $9.99

Energy Sheets - (2 packs in Mint Boost) Value $2 Total

I do NOT recommend these energy sheets. They do not taste good at all and didn't seem to provide any energy either.


Verdict: I'm starting to think that 12 Society isn't for me. My BF liked the video game related stuff I got so this box didn't go to waste, but I won't be using any of it. I was hoping 12 Society would have products sourced specifically for their female subscribers, but considering this lifestyle box is geared toward men, that just doesn't seem realistic given the stage they are in as a company.

One other issue, this box is supposed to have over $125 worth of product. But at most I received $70 worth of product. (On the plus side, I do have the option of returning the box - most subscription services do not give you free returns or any returns).

So we'll see if I stick it out another month. It's so tough for me to cancel subscription boxes because I always think the month I cancel will be the best month yet :)
